"Spiritual Training"

“Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come”(I Tim.4:7-8). Many people devote a lot of time to exercise and training in the gym. It’s great to take care of your body by eating healthy and physical exercise. As important as that is, let’s keep it in proper perspective and understand that physical training is not the most important training for us. In the above text, Paul wrote that “bodily training is of some value”. His point is that physical training only benefits us in this life and makes no impact on our spiritual lives.
It’s great to train your body physically, but don’t neglect spiritual training. The beautiful thing about spiritual training is that it benefits us in this life and the next. Godliness is the result of spiritual training and “holds promise for the present life and also the life to come”(I Tim.4:8). I want to be physically fit and healthy because I strongly desire to be around for my wife, kids and hopefully grandchildren someday. More important than that is my commitment to be spiritually fit so that I’m in good standing with God, a good influence on others and prepared for eternal life. Training for godliness requires us to devote time to gathering with the church for worship, reading the Bible and prayer. I encourage you to train physically, but make sure you put the time in for spiritual training also.
