"Do What Makes You Holy, Not Happy"

Have you ever received the advice, just do what makes you happy? Unfortunately, that mindset is very much a part of our culture today. Too many people have bought in and live their daily lives with that attitude. If it will make me happy, I’ll do it. It’s a very selfish mindset that says life is all about me and my happiness. There’s no doubt that we all want to be happy and it seems that people will do nearly anything to find happiness. Sadly, some are so desperate for happiness that they are willing to throw away their morals to find it.
Could it be that man is going about his search for happiness all wrong? It seems the very things that man is convinced will bring him happiness often brings heartache and pain. Maybe our focus should be, do what makes you holy instead of happy. When we do what makes us holy, we do the right thing and we live the right way. When we do what makes us happy we are regularly left feeling guilt because we didn’t do the right thing. Doing what makes me holy is about doing what God wants me to do and living in a way that pleases Him. If we’re striving for holiness instead of happiness, I believe the happiness will come in the form of a guilt free life that honors God.
“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy”(I Pet.1:14-16).
